Vote For San Antonio's Top Wrestlers

Vote For San Antonio’s Top Wrestlers

For the next 2 weeks, The San Antonio Independent Wrestling Scene will be holding a fan vote for the top Wrestlers in San Antonio for the Year 2008. To vote fans should send their lists of top wrestlers ranked in order with #1 being the top to either bayou_926@hotmail.com or to www.myspace.com/bluehatguy. You may include as many wrestlers on your list as you would like as long as the wrestlers on the list appeared in at least ONE indy show within Bexar County during the calendar year 2008. The more wrestlers on your list, the more points the top wrestlers receive toward the final rankings. If your list has 50 wrestlers, your # 1 wrestler gets 50 points and # 50 gets 1 point. If you vote for 10 wrestlers, # 1 gets 10 points and # 10 gets 1 point. If you only vote for 1 wrestler, that wrestler only gets 1 point. Therefore you should include every wrestler whom you feel is deserving of consideration on your list.

To reiterate, you can vote for ANY wrestler who worked an indy show in San Antonio during 2008. According to our records, over 300 wrestlers qualify.

The San Antonio Independent Wrestling Scene would like to take this opportunity to recognize 65 wrestlers whom the Scene can confirm worked a minimum of 10 shows in Bexar during this period. You can include other wrestlers on your list, but votes for wrestlers who did not work in San Antonio will not count.

The Scene's 2008 End of Year Awards

As 2008 comes to an end I am completing my third year of publishing the San Antonio Independent Wrestling Scene report, so it is once again time to look back on the year and recognize some of the greatness that was San Antonio Wrestling 2008. Last year’s awards earned me a degree of controversy and I openly admit that I missed the boat on a couple categories, but with exception of Wrestler of the Year (which is voted on by the readers of the Scene, these awards/recognition are all my own. In other words, these are the opinions of one fan. I invite discussion or even arguments and invite other fans to create their own avenues of recognition for the many wrestlers who have risked so much to entertain us all.

San Antonio Independent Wrestling Scene 2008 Awards

Rookie of the Year: 2008 – “Lunar Eclipse” Junior Garza. There were numerous individuals considered for this award including JC Bravo, Drew Lucid, Ryan Genesis, Just Willie, Pink and others but Junior made the biggest splash of the year and showed improvement in virtually every match. On top of this, he is an individual who appears to respect the business in which he hopes to gain a name.

2007 – Draven

2006 – No Award

Busiest Wrestler of the Year: 2008 – Cobra. This young man appeared in more shows within Bexar County than any other wrestler. He also worked numerous shows in surrounding counties. Anyone seeing Cobra in 2008 will have to acknowledge that the increased work load has done wonders in improving his game as well.

2007 – Gabe "the Babe."

2006 – "One Man" Mike Dell

Lady Wrestler of the Year: 2008 – Rachel Summerlyn More women appeared in San Antonio wrestling shows than in previous years, but there were really no breakout performers to unseat last year’s winner Rachel. Angela, Alektra Blue, Claudia Del Solis, Miss Diss_Lexia, Pink and Diamond Icee all had their moments. I look forward to seeing what next year brings.

2007 – Rachel Summerlyn

2006 – Simply Luscious

Luchador of the Year: 2008 – Sicodelico Jr. Last year, I overlooked Sico, because he primarily worked American style shows, but this year, he was everywhere, appearing in no fewer than 5 different promotions in all manner of matches. His Lucha match against Massive and his series of matches with Scot Summers were among his high points during 2008.

2007 – Mini Diablo

2006 – Mr. Muerte

Tag Team of the Year: 2008 – The Sixth Street Sinners (Mr. Right & Gabe the Babe) This pair impressed every time they stepped into the ring together. Whether accompanied by their manager Sin-Sational Sal or on their own, The Sinners showed they could compete with more established teams and more often than not pulling “match of the night” performances. Last year’s absence of a tag team award looks to be an aberration rather than a trend as more teams are being featured on many local shows.

2007 – No Award

2006 – The Texas Treats (Don Juan & Chris Marval)

Referee of the Year: 2008 – Mike Knoxville. Two years ago, San Antonio refs who were worth a damn were limited to Alex Marrozos and Rick Porter. Knoxville was just another one of the numerous workers who looked at being a ref as a way to get time in the ring in hopes of becoming a wrestler. Since realizing that he could accomplish more working behind the scenes and concentrating on being a great referee, Mike has become one of the most valuable members of the ACW team and has become the referee we saw flashes of in 2007. A special nod to Alfred Olivares who has improved immeasurably during the last year he has spent being mentored by Alex Marrozos. Things are really looking up in this area.

2007 – Rick Porter

2006 – Alex Marrozos

Champion of the Year: 2008 – Jimmy Jacobs. No one had the type of year Scot Summers had in 2007. Brett Thunder made a strong case for himself with his J-Cup victory and his title reigns in both TWE and SCW, but Jacobs’s performance at the Lone Star Classic – going through Jerry Lynn, Scot Summers, Dingo and Shawn Vexx solidified his position here, even though I doubt that he will appreciate the recognition.

2007 – "Showtime" Scot Summers

2006 – Hotstuff Hernandez

Breakout Wrestler of the Year: 2008 – (Tie) Brett Thunder and Rachel Summerlyn in just her second full year as a pro wrestler (how did I miss her for Rookie of the year in 2007?) Rachel has gained national recognition in a bourgeoning women’s division. Thunder realized this year that in order to “Breakout” in San Antonio wrestling, he had to get out of San Antonio. Look for both of these wrestlers to continue making waves nationally.

2007 - JT LaMotta

2006 – "One Man" Mike Dell

Storyline of the Year: 2008 – JT LaMotta vs. Jimmy Jacobs and members of Age of the Fall. Whether it was Tyler Black, Delirious and MsChif or the evil mastermind Jimmy Jacobs, it seems that every time JT LaMotta turned around he was being targeted by members of this ROH-based faction.

2007: The Texas Treats Break-Up.

2006 – TWE invades American Championship Wrestling

Match of the Year: 2008 – Brett Thunder vs. Kevin Douglas (J-Cup Finals) There were so many contenders for this award that I literally did not decide until I typed the match. If you ask me tomorrow I might well say something different. Summers vs. Plisken (TnT), LaMotta vs. Thunder (TWE), Summers vs. LaMotta vs. Jacobs (ACW), Summerlyn vs. Del Rey (ACW), & Jacobs vs. Vexx (ACW) were all possible choices. Give me 10 minutes and I’ll come up with 5 more.

2007 – Jerry Lynn vs. Showtime Summers (Lynn wins the IWA-Texas Title in 29:58.)

2006 – Children of Pain vs. Skitzo & Hector Navarro (Tables Match at When Worlds Collide)

Show of the Year: 2008 – ACW’s Lone Star Classic ’08 It seemed like ACW shows were getting better with each show during the latter part of 2008, so making this choice seems natural. There is no reason not to believe that the LSC will be a strong contender of Show of the Year for a long time to come.

2007 – ACW's Lone Star Classic '07

2006 – TWE's When Worlds Collide

Promotion of the Year: 2008 – Warriors 4 Christ Wrestling. I am really going out on a limb inviting controversy on this one. Remember however that even though ACW had tremendous shows every time out, they cut back from about 30 San Antonio shows in 2007 to only 9 in 2008 with an additional 5 in Austin or El Paso. RCW has only been back in action for a handful of shows and has yet to regain its full glory. SCW started the year looking like they had this category nailed down, but then suffered through some set backs that could have killed most promotions. TWE was “on again – off again” for most of the year. The others weren’t able to step up either. W4CW however grew in strength and in quality throughout the year. They legitimately topped 300 in attendance on no fewer than 4 shows. While the wrestling still has much room for improvement, the production quality is top rate and I can firmly assert that no other promotion in the area brought as many new fans to their shows than W4CW. I am counting on the wrestlers and the promoter of W4CW to continue to improve their match quality to the point that they can be viewed as something more than a promotion with more heart than experience and talent.

2007 – Anarchy Championship Wrestling

2006 – River City Wrestling

And Finally,

The Wrestler of the Year

will be voted on by the readers of The San Antonio Independent Wrestling Scene. Details will be announced later this week...

Congratulations Cowboy Claxton

With all the shows in the San Antonio area last night, The San Antonio Independent Wrestling does not want to overlook the accomplishment of San Antonio based wrestler "Cowboy" James Claxton who defeated Byron Wilcott to win the FEW heavyweight title in Tyler Texas last night.

Claxton is a graduate of the Texas Wrestling Academy and has held numerous titles in the Texas Wrestling Entertainment promotion as well as being a former two time Southern Championship Wrestling Tag Team Champion (with partners Brett Thunder and Dusty Wolfe.)

Byron Wilcott, formerly known as Angel of SIN, recently signed a WWE developmental contract and will be relocating to Florida soon. Wilcott most recently was seen in San Antonio at TWE's Star Warz 2008 and has also appeared on a couple of Anarchy Championship Wrestling shows in 2007.

Full results from last night's show can be found at www.fulleffectwrestling.com

Congratulations once again to both "Cowboy" Claxton and Byron Wilcott for their accomplishments.

Book Review: Journal of a Journeyman by Dusty Wolfe

Journal of a Journeyman
By Dusty Wolfe
With Brian Thompson & Brian Tramel

Available through www.rasslinriotonline.com

In the spirit of full disclosure I should begin by revealing that I first met Dusty Wolfe over 30 years ago when we were in high school geometry class together, and although we weren’t in touch during the interceding years during which most of the action of this book takes place, I consider Dusty a friend.

That being said, I feel safe in my assertion that the book “Journal of a Journeyman” by Dusty Wolfe (and the two Brians) will undoubtedly be viewed as the definitive book on the subject (that subject being getting drunk in exotic locations with very large and rowdy men.) I would even venture to state that this book is destined to become one of the top selling books of all time, slightly behind the King James Version of the Bible and 6 of the 7 Harry Potter novels.

Just because I have been called “a shill” and much worse is no reason not to believe me when I say that this book has something for everyone! Amongst its many benefits is it will make you appear more attractive to women of all shapes and sizes, from 400 lb senioritas to bellicose midgets. In just over 200 pages, Dusty crams in 54 chapters, each jam packed with an exciting anecdote with no excessively long words and each presented in doses the perfect length to read in the time it takes to finish your morning bowel movement.

While the list of names, famous and not-so-famous, with whom Dusty has crossed paths during the years is quite impressive, Dusty somehow manages to resist the temptation to describe most of them naked.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of having read Dusty’s book is, once you have read it, you will have heard every one of Dusty’s stories and will never have to actually talk to him again. That has to be worth the price in and of itself.

Check out www.rasslinriotonline.com to order the book. Buy two copies because you’ll want to have one for yourself and one to loan out to your cheap friends.

FPW has a good thing going and hopefully San Angelo is ready to move past the era of being plagued by an inferior product.

The Top Wrestlers in San Antonio

As with last year, the San Antonio Independent Wrestling Scene will present end-of year recognition for the Promotions, Wrestlers and other Workers who entertained the fans in San Antonio during the year 2008. In late December, fans will be encouraged to vote for their favorite wrestlers. Any wrestler appearing on any independent show in Bexar County will be eligible for the title of “San Antonio’s Top Wrestler.” To assist in voting, the Scene will recognize all wrestlers confirmed to have worked on 10 or more shows in Bexar County.

The list for 2008 is shaping up to be quite different than last year as Anarchy Championship Wrestling, which presented over 30 shows in San Antonio in 2007 has cut back their shows and is splitting time in Austin, will only run 7 San Antonio shows during 2008. River City Wrestling also will run significantly fewer shows in 2008 than they did in 2007. With SCW running mostly outside Bexar County (The Adkins shows are the only in-county shows) and TWE continuing to run shows both in and out of the county, many wrestlers who might be considered to be among the best working in Texas have found themselves working fewer shows in Bexar County without actually cutting back on their overall workload.

The shows which run in San Antonio more often, i.e. TWA, MAW, PWI, IPW, W4CW and TnT tend to use talent who live and work primarily in the South Texas area. This is not to imply anything about the level of talent of these workers, merely to point out that fewer North Texas and out-of-state wrestlers are likely to earn recognition for having worked 10 or more shows in Bexar County during 2008.

That being said, so far, through the end of September, the San Antonio Independent Wrestling Scene has been able to confirm the following wrestlers as having worked 10 or more shows during 2008. I have missed several shows and have not always been able to get results from every show, so if you believe any wrestler not listed has worked the requisite number of shows, please contact me (bayou_926@hotmail.com) with the information. The list is in alphabetical order. Thank you all for everything you have done to entertain San Antonio wrestling fans.

Match # 4 - Open Division Title Match

Match # 6 - Main Event - SCW Heavy Weight Championship Match
Challenger "Superstar" Dick Dallas (win by count-out, no title change) vs. Champion Jacob Ladder

A few Notes: Vince Vile may have lost the match but I believe Mad Dog lost the war. After the match, Vile was able to jump Mad Dog from behind and deliver a pretty good beat-down. Vince was also calling out to Johnny Rage in an attempt to show his friend that he can get violent. Johnny Rage was not in the building.

Rudy Boy Gonzalez may be a veteran in the ring but he is also mowing through SCW creating havoc along the way. Galan put a great effort in but the powerhouse RGB was just too much.

Most of us have seen both Ronnnie the Red and Brett Thunder for a few years now, mostly at TWE where these two have show cased their talents week-in and week-out. We were extremely lucky to have both of these guys a part of SCW this past year. Brett and Ronnie are both moving to the Florida area. They have great opportunities there and I know they will both flourish. We at SCW would like to thank both of these guys for being a big part of SCW and for what they both mean to professional wrestling in South Texas. Hopefully, they will remember the way back to Texas from time to time. Good luck guys. We know you will do well.

The Mike Dell and Rory Fox match was really a classic. Of course Rory believes that Mike should stop trying to go after his Open Division Title and join him once again to go after the tag team titles. Dell would have nothing to do with it much to the crowds approval. This match went back and forth and there was a double roll-up and each man's shoulders were on the mat. However Rory did get his shoulder up right before the 3-count. Rory, Mike and every fan in there thought that Dell was the champion, all except one person; The Ref. As he said the shoulder of Rory Fox did come up before the count of three and Dell's did not.

In the tag team match, Claxton was thrown into the steel post which left Dusty in a 2 on 1 situation. This was a different kind of Double Trouble. They became just vicious and relentlessly attacked Dusty as the ref had no choice to call for the bell, but the beating continued. Claxton did regain his bearings and cleared the ring with a chair. We have all seen Double Trouble, who have had held tag belts all over the country and they were SCW Tag Team Champions as well. It just seems as though they really did not care about winning the belts but more about just roughing Dusty and Claxton up. This could get interesting.

The SCW Heavyweight Title match between "Superstar" Dick Dallas and Jacob Ladder was a match in which there were chairs and tables which Dallas seemed to take all of the shots. Ladder again was working on the knee of Dallas trying to ground the 290 Pound Dallas. Rudy Boy again came out to the ring and distracted the referee as Ladder caught Dallas with a chair shot and covered him, but Dallas was able to kick out at a 2 count. Again Rudy distracts the ref once he see Dallas gaining some steam. As Ladder came running towards to corner that Dallas was in with the chair in ready to deliver another blow, Dallas dove from the 2nd rope with a spear that caused the Beeville fans to erupt. Rudy did grab the leg of Ladder, brought him to the floor and to the locker room. Dallas pleaded with the ref not to count him out but the ref had no choice and counted out the champion. Dallas was incensed and grabbed the mic calling for The Commissioner of SCW, Dusty Wolfe to the ring. Dallas demanded that he wanted a match with Ladder and since Ladder "likes chairs so much," as Dallas put it, Dallas' request was for a No-DQ match: No Count- outs, Anything Legal, Tables, Ladders, Chairs, Taped Fist, Anything. Dallas will get his wish as Dusty Wolfe granted request.

Our next show is in Castroville on 10-11-08. From the way things are building at SCW, you do not want to miss it. If you are planning to come to this show or our 1 year anniversary show in Castroville on Nov. 22nd, I would recommend that you order your tickets now. As most know The Garage Sports Bar is a smaller venue which will sell out. See you guys in a few weeks!
