San Antonio Independent Wrestling Scene Shut Down Indefinately

It has become clear that I can either be a fan or I can write this blog. Unless I can find a way to reconcile this paradox, I will always choose being a fan. With this stated, I am going to discontinue this report at least through the end of this year. I will continue to keep a calendar of upcoming events on my myspace page

myspace.com/bluehatguy

I want to thank the wrestlers, the fans and the other involved in indy wrestling for the support I have received over the last year. In 2006 I attended about 80 wrestling shows with over 200 wrestlers in about 500 matches. I attended shows in San Antonio as well as:
Arlington
Austin
Brenham
Caldwell
Corpus Christi
Denton
Devine
El Campo
Floresville
Schertz
Lytle
Victoria

San Antonio is very lucky to have such a thriving independent wrestling community. Hopefully the relationship between the fans and the promotions will continue to improve from it's recent low point.

Look for me at the shows, I'll be in the crowd. Send me a message if you have a question or just a word of kindness, I'll try to respond.

Thankyou,
Barry

RE: Further Star Warz fallout

I have received a personal email from Rudy Gonzalez. In it he has stated that he plans on being in studio with Stan Callahan for the Indywarz Radio netcast next Monday to make the formal and official statements on behalf of TWE concerning the incidents which lead to the cancellation of Star Warz. To listen to the netcast, go to www.indywarzradio.com and follow the instructions on that page.

I am hoping that this will provide more of what is needed for wrestling fans to seek closure on this issue.

Wrestling fans have been disrespected by numerous parties, but the apologies are being made. I suspect that most fans will find a way to deal with this on a personal level. We are wrestling fans and we want to believe. While some will forgive, none will forget.

RE: Star Warz situation fall out

During the last 30 hours or so, this situation has been very dificult for everyone involved. I have tried to be an advocate for the fans who have been hurt and disrespected by the incident resulting in the cancellation.

A few minutes ago I received this from Joshua Long, the man who booked the rec center in order to disrupt Rudy's plans;

"I didn't think about how this would effect the fans and for this I am sorry. For the life of me I did not think that Rudy would not let the fans know......I was wrong."

Separate from this, Rudy Gonzalez has posted a brief message on the TWE message board which promises to announce a reschedule date as well as an official statement and apology.

I think this is all that we, as fans, are asking for. The fans deserve respect and it appears that we are now being shown it.

Thank you
Barry

Star Warz Cancelled or Postponed or something.....

"It is not enough that I succeed. It is also necessary that my enemies be seen to fail."
- Quotation attributed to several, including Larry Ellison, Gore Vidal & Genghis Khan

The TWE Show Star Warz which was scheduled for Sunday December 3rd at the Harlendale Recreation Center did not occur due to the actions and the inactions of several people. It seems inappropriate to report on this until Texas Wrestling Entertainment CEO Rudy Boy Gonzalez makes a formal announcement, however RBG is unavailable for comment and has made no statement other than the removal of information concerning Star Warz from the official TWE site.

Since I started this report eleven months ago, I have tried to be positive in reporting on the indy scene in San Antonio. I have seen countless matches on dozens of shows, not just in San Antonio, and although not all of these matches were five star classics, I have tried to present them in such a way as to shine a positive light on the workers who risk injury for little or no money, just to entertain the fans. I tried to avoid using the terms such as KayFabe and Marks and Smarts in order to show respect for the product. I have tried to stay out of the politics and petty bitching between the personalities involved in presenting the competing shows. I haven't been altogether successful in avoiding these politics.

I thought that by proclaiming that I was "just a fan" I could avoid any responsibility in these issues. Truth be told, by putting myself in a position as someone reporting on the matches, I was putting myself forward as someone special. I have enjoyed the attention and respect I have received from those people who are really involved in this business which I honestly have nothing to do with. I honestly like almost everyone I have met since I started this project, from my fellow fans, to the in-ring talent, to the promoters and behind the scenes workers.

Now a situation has arisen where the grudges and antagonisms between people has directly contributed to a situation which adversely affects the fans and negatively reflects on two of the promotions that have been most important to San Antonio Wrestling. I find myself in the middle of this because I have positioned myself as some sort of "voice of the fans." The fans were cheated out of a show tonight and apparently no one gave a whole lot of thought to the fans. We deserve more respect than this.

As I mentioned, Rudy has not been available for comment. This in itself is a problem. We deserve to know what happened. It appears that the location for the show was announced before its availability was assured.

I went to the Rec Center tonight and spoke with the members of the RCW crew who were there playing basketball. Eventually I was given some answers to my questions. Although the center had been reserved from 8 PM on by some people uninvolved with wrestling, a person who had a personal grudge with Rudy Gonzalez chose to take things a step further and book the center from 5PM to 8 PM in order to exacerbate the situation. The problem was further complicated in that the person with the grudge, Josh, works for RCW in a technical support position. RCW personnel were invited to play basketball and apparently celebrate the failure of their chief competition. Even though Star Warz would most likely have been cancelled or postponed without this action, no one present seemed concerned how this would negatively reflect on RCW or on how none of the fans were served in any way by these actions.

Pro Wrestling is a business that revolves around respect. There are 4 vital areas of respect. Respect for the Business. Respect for your co-workers. Respect for your fans. and Respect for yourself. No one involved, directly or peripherally, was treated with the respect they deserve in this situation.

As I mentioned earlier, I have tried to stay outside the innermost circle of the wrestling lockerroom. Unfortunately I find that I have taken 2 steps too many into that metaphorical lockerroom. To be honest I am greatly disappointed by the whole chain of events. With this in mind I have decided to discontinue the San Antonio Independent Wrestling Scene report until such time that I no longer feel this way.

I want to stress that I continue to support Indy Wrestling and the Workers who dedicate themselves to being the best they can be in the ring. In no way am I discouraging anyone from attending an Indy Show to see for themselves how good it can be to see the action up close.

I would like to encourage the local workers to continue your efforts to improve. If you are not devoted to being the best wrestler you can be, get out. Wrestling is not a hobby. I would like to remind the promoters that if they are not dedicated to presenting the best show possible for the fans, using only the best talent available, then they should close their doors. Treat the business as a business and remember your customers are the fans. If you aren't going to try to be the best, you are doing a disservice to the fans and to your business.

I imagine that I will be back sitting ringside at a show sooner than later. Hopefully I will be able to enjoy the action with the same enthusiasm that has made me a fan to begin with.

I will be maintaining my myspace page (www.myspace.com/bluehatguy) and its calendar until I decide what I am going to do. Please feel free to drop me a message, either there or comment here or email me at bayou_926@hotmail.com as always, include the word "wrestling" in the subject line of any email
